DHL Express Volumetric Weight — the 5,000 cm³/kg Divisor

DHL Express prices international shipments on volumetric weight: package volume divided by 5,000, billed in kilograms. The rules below follow the DHL Express Service & Rate Guides, retrieved August 30, 2026.

The 5,000 cm³/kg divisor

Volumetric weight = length × width × height (in centimeters) ÷ 5,000. The divisor means 5,000 cubic centimeters of space count as one kilogram. On imperial measurements DHL Express equivalents divide by 139 in³/lb — the same density the US carriers use for domestic DIM weight.

A 60 × 40 × 40 cm box has 96,000 cm³ of volume: 96,000 ÷ 5,000 = 19.2 kg of volumetric weight. Actual weight of 10 kg loses — the shipment bills on the 19.2 kg figure, not 10.

Volumetric weight rounds up to the next 0.5 kg

DHL rounds the final volumetric weight up to the next 0.5 kg per piece — so 19.2 kg bills at 19.5 kg, and 19.6 kg bills at 20.0 kg. Actual weight rounds the same way. This half-kilo step is smaller than the US carriers' whole-pound step, but it still compounds on the volume multiplication above.

The dimension-rounding caveat

DHL Express publishes no official dimension-rounding convention. DimCheck's documented working assumption is that each side rounds to the nearest whole centimeter — which means DHL can round a fraction down, unlike FedEx, UPS, and USPS, which always round up. DHL also re-measures and re-weighs pieces at its service centers, so dimensional disputes are settled by DHL's own tape measure.

Piece limits and the surcharges around them

Express pieces are limited to 120 cm on the longest side and 80 cm on the second-longest side, and 70 kg actual or volumetric weight. Above those lines:

  • Overweight Piece applies when actual or volumetric weight exceeds 70 kg — and pieces over 70 kg must be palletized in the first place.
  • Oversize Piece applies when the longest side exceeds 100 cm, or when the second-longest side exceeds 80 cm (criterion effective January 1, 2026). Oversize Piece does not apply to pieces already subject to Overweight Piece.
  • Pieces over 300 cm on the longest side are not accepted.

Surcharge amounts are country-specific and change annually — the destination-country Service & Rate Guide carries the current fee.

When to use the imperial math

If you measure in inches, convert the divisor instead of the package: DHL Express treats 139 in³ as one pound of volume, and DimCheck's DHL calculator applies that 139 in³/lb divisor to inch measurements directly — no unit conversion on your side.
