FedEx Additional Handling and Oversize Fees
Additional Handling and Oversize are how FedEx prices packages that are large, oddly shaped, or too big for standard processing. The criteria below are verified against the FedEx Express 2026 Rate Guide and FedEx rate-change pages, retrieved August 30, 2026, and are the same rules the surcharge checker applies.
What triggers Additional Handling — Dimension
Any one of these criteria triggers the charge — the triggers do not all have to fire:
- Longest side over 48 in
- Second-longest side over 30 in
- Length + girth over 105 in (criterion in effect since January 18, 2021)
- Volume over 10,368 in³ — the equivalent of 6 cubic feet (criterion effective January 12, 2026)
FedEx rounds each dimension up to the next whole inch before any of these checks (round-up has applied since August 18, 2025), so a box that measures 47.1 × 30.1 × 24.1 in is evaluated as 48 × 31 × 25 in — and may cross a trigger on rounding alone.
Additional Handling — Weight
A separate weight criterion applies when actual weight exceeds 50 lb. FedEx's published pages do not state when this criterion took effect, so no date is claimed here — only the threshold itself.
The 40-pound minimum billable weight
Packages that trigger Additional Handling — Dimension bill at no less than 40 lb, even when both actual weight and DIM weight are lower. The minimum matters most for dense, narrow boxes that clear a dimension trigger but stay small on DIM weight:
A 49 × 10 × 10 in box weighing 8 lb has 4,900 in³ of volume. DIM weight is 4,900 ÷ 139 = 35.3 → 36 lb. Without the surcharge it would bill 36 lb; with Additional Handling it bills the 40-lb minimum instead.
What triggers Oversize
Oversize is the tier above Additional Handling. Any one of:
- Longest side over 96 in (criterion in effect since January 18, 2021)
- Length + girth over 130 in (criterion in effect since January 18, 2021)
- Volume over 17,280 in³ — the equivalent of 10 cubic feet (effective January 12, 2026)
- Actual weight over 110 lb (effective January 12, 2026)
Only the highest of Additional Handling, Oversize, and the Unauthorized Package charge applies to a shipment — they do not stack (this has applied since January 12, 2026).
Above the maximums: Unauthorized Package (Ground)
For FedEx Ground, a package over the published maximums — longest side over 108 in, length + girth over 165 in, or actual weight over 150 lb — incurs the Unauthorized Package charge with a 90-lb minimum billable weight. US domestic Express packages over these limits are not accepted at all.
A package that crosses several criteria at once
Take a 49 × 18 × 14 in box weighing 20 lb. The longest side is over 48 in, length + girth is 49 + 36 + 28 = 113 in (over 105), and volume is 12,348 in³ (over 10,368) — three Additional Handling triggers at once, but no Oversize trigger (longest side is under 96 in and volume is under 17,280 in³). DIM weight is 12,348 ÷ 139 = 88.8 → 89 lb, so the box bills at 89 lb plus the Additional Handling fee.
